JAMES POWELL HALLFORD was born about 1812 in South Carolina. He later moved to Tennessee. He latermoved to Missouri. He later moved to Texas. The 1840 census show James living with his family in Carroll Township, Platte County, Missouri. James was ordained by order of the Lonesome Dove Church October 28, 1863 at a C.S.A. camp near Cheneyville, Louisiana and served as Chaplain for Alexanders's Regiment. The presbytery consisted of brethern from the different commands of General Taylor's Army: Elder J. M. McGraw,Chaplain of Young's Regiment, J. C. Harrison, Lieut. Colonel of Speight'sRegiment, Elder M. V. Smith of Captain Randal's Regiment was appointed Clerk. Elder A. L. Hay was Chaplain of Flournea's Regiment. His daughter-in-law, Mrs. Eva Hallford of San Antonio, widow of his youngestson Tolbert "Toby" Hallford, reported in 1965 that he laid a Bible in a cornerstone at the Capitol in Austin, Texas during dedication ceremonies. James is buried in Lonesome Dove Baptist Cemetery, Tarrant County, Texas. |
