Gregg Family James Gregg was born about 1759 in Carroll County, Maryland. He was the son of Joshua Gregg.
He married Rachel McClellan.
John Gregg, Sr. (1785, married Julia Annis King), Abraham Gregg (1790, married Janette Alison), Jane Gregg (1792, married James Harvey King), Nathan Gregg (1794), Samuel Gregg (1797), William Gregg (1799), Reverend James Gregg (1801, married Mary Johnston), Annis Gregg (1803, William Burton Childress), Rachel Gregg (1806), and Mary Gregg (1809).
The Greggs came to Tennessee about 1779.
He was one of three original elders ordained by Reverend Samuel Doak in 1782 in the New Bethel Presbyterian Church. He was the first teacher in Piney Flats, Tennessee.
In 1793, James Gregg was captain of the Sullivan County militia.
In 1813, James Gregg witnessed a deed for Leonard Hart.
in 1820, Abraham Gregg witnessed Heinrich Smith's will.
In 1829, Abraham Gregg was witness to and executor of John Smith's will.
In 1830 Rachel Gregg was head of household in Sullivan County, Tennessee. The household consisted of a woman between 60 & 69 3 women and a man between 20 & 29 an enslaved man between 25 & 35
During the Cherokee removal in 1836-1837, Abraham Gregg was first lieutenant in McClellan's company.
At the time of the 1840 census, Abraham Gregg and James Gregg in Buffalo Ridge, Washington County, Tennessee.

State of Tennessee, Sullivan County On this 13 day of April 1844 [could be 1842] personally appeared before the subscriber a Justice of the peace Mrs. Rachael Gregg the Resident of the County and State aforesaid aged 75 years the first day of June next who being first duly sworn according to law doth make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the provision made by the act of Congress passed July the 7th 1838 entitled an act granting half pay and pensions to certain widows that she is the widow of James Gregg who was a soldier in the war of the revolution that he was a private in the North Carolina militia in the fall of 1781 under Captain Thomas Wallace's troop of Cavalry and served a campaign of 6 months under the aforesaid Captain Wallace Colonel Shelby and General Marion [Francis Marion] & she further declares that she was married to the said James Gregg on the 22nd day of January 1788 that her husband the aforesaid James Greg died 21st August 1815 that she was not married to him prior to his leaving the service but the marriage took place previous to 1st January 1794 viz. at the time above stated that she is still a widow that the family Record is a true Record of her marriage. Sworn to and subscribed on the day and year above written before me a Justice of the peace for the County of Sullivan and I further certify that the said he Miss [sic] Rachel Gregg is from bodily infirmity unable to attend court. I further certify that full faith and credit is due the statement of Miss Rachel Gregg I [sic, In] witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this the 13th day of April 1844. [p 6: On March 14, 1845, in Sullivan County, Tenn., Abraham Gregg, 54, son of James and Rachel Gregg gave been affidavit stating in part: “...he is the son of James Gregg who was a soldier and Captain in the war of the Revolution he further declares that he has often heard his Father James Gregg say that he was a Captain in the South in the war of the Revolution for a short time and he further declares that the Reason the service as Captain was not specified in the Declaration made by his Mother Rachel Gregg was that it could not be come at by living testimony and such Services as could be proven by two of his Comrades Elijah Cross1 who is now drawing a pension for the same service and Edward Cox2 his Lieutenant who is also a pensioner. Affiant further declares that he has often heard his Father the above named James Gregg say that after he had rendered his services as Captain in the South he returned back and then joined Captain Thomas Walace [Thomas Wallace's] Troop [of] horse man under Colonel Isaac Shelby and served then another Campaign of six months under the above named officers and affiant further declares that in regard to these services of his Father the aforesaid James Gregg as Captain in Britons neck [sic, Brittons Neck] Regiment he has heard him his Father frequently speak of Colonel Ervin and well recollects of hearing his father the aforesaid James Gregg speak of sending to the South Carolina for something as compensation for services done as Captain and that he received this compensation some years after the war ended and he further declares that from the conversation that he heard his father the above named James Gregg make use of affiant is sure that it is the same James Gregg as certified by the Comptroller of South Carolina as having done 90 days service as Captain in the brittans neck [sic, Brittons Neck] Regiment.
