James Graves was baptised on 8th April 1787 at Stotfold in Bedfordshire, son of John and Jane Graves.
On 23rd March 1811, aged about 24, James married Fanny Copps. She was from the village of Weston in Hertfordshire, about six miles south of Stotfold. They married at Weston but then returned to Stotfold after their marriage, having three children baptised there between 1813 and 1818. They then moved a couple of miles east of Stotfold to the village of Newnham in Hertfordshire, where they had another five children baptised between 1821 and 1834, although one of these died as a baby.
The 1841 census finds James, Fanny and three of their children living at a place called Waterloo in Newnham. James was working as an agricultural labourer. The 1851 and 1861 censuses each find James and Fanny living in the parish of Newnham too.
Fanny died in 1862, aged 74. James survived her by seven years. He died in 1869, aged 82.
