In the name of the benevolent father of all, I, James D GRAVES of the County of Allen and State of Indiana being of [unsound?] health but of sound mind; make an[d] publish this my last will and testament, to wit:
1] I request and devise that my beloved wife, Eliza Jane GRAVES shall have full possession of my property and effects after my Death, after paying all my just debts, to have and to hold the same during her natural life to be empowered to collect any and all my just claims. The said Eliza Jane GRAVES shall be empowered to sell and convey said property but shall ask the counsel of her older children, as well as other good counsel. If after my death if I will have any more money [than?] my wife [could?] want [or use?] of the purchase of a house for herself, she shall put said money on interest, by being well secured by mortgage on good real estate, and the said Eliza Jane GRAVES shall at any time when she sees proper to assist George W GRAVES and Angeline CARR in the purchase of a small house and have the same deeded to them, but is not obliged to inconvenience herself on account of said purchase. I further earnestly request that my beloved wife Eliza Jane in relation to the foregoing will use every request by me made judic[iously?] and with the gratest [sic] economy.
And if the said Eliza Jane GRAVES will assist the said George W GRAVES and Angeline CARR in the way before mentioned, the amount so expended to be written out of the share of the said G W GRAVES and Angeline CARR at the final disposition of my property after the death of my wife Eliza Jane GRAVES with [6?]% interest from the time of receiving the same, and if the said Eliza Jane GRAVES assist any other of my kin it shall be on the above conditions.
2] I further request and devise that after the death of my wife Eliza Jane GRAVES that all just debts shall be paid and the balance to be divided equally amongst my eight heirs or children as follows: Thomas A, George, Christian R GRAVES, Margaret M MILLER Dec, her heirs [one share?] , Carolin RANSOM, Angeline CARR, George W GRAVES, Harriet [S?] GRAVES, and Joseph M S GRAVES, the before mentioned heirs or their heirs all have equal share of my effects after the death of my wife Eliza Jane GRAVES.
I hereby revoke all former wills by me made at any time previous to this date hereof, in witness whereof I have set my hand and seal this 19 day of October AD 1881. /s/ James D GRAVES [seal].
