Information on James Gilliland

From "An illustrated, historical and biographical sketch of the descendants of William Cowden who migrated from Ireland to America about A.D. 1730", by Robert Cowden, pg. 19:

James Gilliland (2) was born in 1739. He married Hannah, a daughter of Joseph Adams, a Revolutionary War soldier. James (2) was Second Lieutenant in Captain John Kinkaid's Company of Colonel Montgomery's Regiment, Chester County, Militia, 1777. He appears to have witnessed more wills and to have been executor of more wills than any man of his time in that region, between 1782 and 1795. He was an elder in the Presbyterian Church in 1785, and died May 10, 1795, and was buried in Fagg's Manor churchyard. His grave is marked by a good stone, still in excellent condition. Both of the James's, father and son, were advocate^ of temperance, and were evidently religious, and one would presume that they were public-spirited and much respected and trusted by their neighbors.
