    Vol. 8, p. 105 Will of "James Gardner of Marshfield Clerk", dated 29 Nov 1737, proved 21 Sep 1739, bequeaths to wife [name not specified] my part of Branch Island [to James at her death], all slaves and moveable estate to dispose amongst all my daughters in such proportion as she shall think best; to son Thomas Gardner; to son James Gardner. Wife to be executrix. Witnesses include Nathaniel Thomas Esq.
    21 Sep 1739: Letters of execution on will of the Rev'd Mr James Gardner late of Marshfield granted to Mrs Mary Gardner Exec'rx.

    Rev James Gardner was ordained in 1707 at the First Church in Marshfield which was formed in 1632. At first, the Marshfield church met in homes, until our little congregation constructed its first building on land donated by William Thomas, near the present Winslow Cemetery. It was small and had a thatched roof. In 1706 the congregation constructed a meeting house. Rev James Gardner succeed his sister-in-law's father Rev Edward Thompson to become the forth pastor of the church.

    John Gould married Mary, the widow of Rev. James Gardner, who was born in Scotland and ordained in 1707 at the first Church in Marshfield, where he died 6 September 1739. She died at Weymouth 27 Jan 1746 aged 60 or 69. The author notes Jacob Goold son of John Goold by his first wife married Deborah (Gardner) Sampson the son of Rev James Gardner and widow of Mich Sampson a Mayflower descendant.
