"James Gardner first appears by name in the records of Gloucester and Essex County on Jun 19, 1661, when he married Elizabeth Vinson. Although he might be supposed to have been of the second generation, in New England, there is no evidence to connect him with any Gardner family in the towns adjacent to Gloucester and he was probably a late immigrant. … he had married secondly widow Mary (Elwell) Dolever. This marriage is recorded in Gloucester as having taken place on December 16, 1684, but as this was eight days after the date given for his death it is obvious that one date or the other─possibly both─is wrong."
