1 James Daniel FRENCH Birth: 10 Nov 1838, Giles CO VA1 Death: 5 Jan 1932, Falls Mills, Tazewell CO VA1 Father: Andrew L. FRENCH SR (~1815-) Mother: Rebecca S. DAY (~1815-) 1”Tazewell County Heritage” Page 99. On 25 July 1861, at the age of 24, James inlisted for the Confederacy in Tazewell County and served as a Private in Co. H-Tazewell Troopers, 8th Regiment, Virginia Calvary. James stayed in the service until the end of the war but was furloughed home for a month or more prior to the end of the war on account of injuries. The injury was listed as a shoulder dislocation and neck injury which was caused by being thrown from a horse during the service. James was at home when the order to disband was given. James was dropped from the Confederate rolls on 15 Oct 1864. Thomas Dangerfield was with the 17th (Other source states 16th) Regiment, Virginia Cavalry who traveled with the 8th Cavalry throughout the Civil War. When Thomas Dangerfield was killed James made the long and dangerous journey to inform Thomas’ wife, Henrietta E. (Belcher) Dangerfield. While James was explaining the death to Henrietta, Union troops arrived to search the house. Due to his small size James was able to hide beneath Henrietta’s hoop skirt while she sat on a chair to avoid detection. James D. French died on 5 Jan 1932 and is buried next to his wife. The grave is located in Falls Mills, Tazewell CO VA.The gravemarker lists his birth year incorrectly as 1837. James took the U.S. Oath of Allegiance on 30 May 1865. James was listed as 5’8” tall, dark complexion, black eyes and brown hair. his occupation was listed as a farmer. (Confederate Pension Application) James’s gravestone is marked with the C.S.A. (Confederate States of America) emblem indicating that he was probably a member of the Sons of the Confederate Veterans (SCV). James knew Thomas Dangerfield, his future wife’s husband, during the Civil War.
