James Farley was born in Ireland in 1843 or 1844. At the age of seven, James, his mother, and three siblings traveled from Liverpool, England to America on the ship, Shannon. They arrived at the Port of New York on July 10, 1851.

Records show that James Farley had joined a three-month company called Company H of the 67th Illinois Infantry during the period of the Civil War.

James Farley did not move from Illinois to Dakota Territory with his father and four siblings. His date of death is not known with certainty. According to the obituary of his youngest brother, Lawrence Farley, from 1916, James Farley's last place of residence was Illinois; and, he had preceded his youngest brother, Lawrence, in death. And, none of the obituaries of his four siblings listed James as a survivor; and, this included the obituaries of his oldest sister, Anna (Farley) Maher, from 1907.
