per book entitiled "Ellis, Taylor and certain related families, by Clyde Taylor Ellis, he was born in NY and served in the New York militia from Albany Co. during the Revolutionary War. An unpublished manuscript by Samuel Jess Ellis says James Ellis moved from NY to NJ, then to Tennessee where he married Sarah Riggs of Shelby Co. in 1780. James wrote his will 17 Sept. 1817 naming his wife and children in the will, with the exception of Delilah who apparently died before the will was written. The will was proved 8 Nov. 1817 in Lincoln Co. Court, Fayetteville, TN and recorded in Will Book 1, p 239-241.
