James Disney was baptised on 1st April 1752 at Langar in Nottinghamshire, son of Samuel Disney and his wife Mary. James's father died in 1766 and his mother died the following year, leaving James an orphan at the age of fifteen. It seems likely that after his parents' deaths he left Langar and went to live at Keyworth, about eight miles west of Langar, where his paternal grandfather still lived at the time. His grandfather died in 1770.

On 22nd May 1774, aged 22, James married Jane Wild at Owthorpe, about half way between Langar and Keyworth. They had a son at Owthorpe the following year, but he appears to have died as baby. James and Jane then moved to Keyworth, where they had four children baptised between 1776 and 1784, one of whom died young.

Between December 1784 and November 1785 the family left Keyworth and moved about sixteen miles west to Ockbrook in Derbyshire. Jane's father had lived at Ockbrook before her birth, so perhaps there was a connection to Ockbrook on her side. James and Jane had another five children baptised at Ockbrook between 1785 and 1795, one of whom died young.

Between 1795 and 1798 the family moved again, to Draycott in the parish of Wilne, just south-east of Ockbrook. They had their eleventh and final child baptised at Wilne in 1798. A couple of months later one of their older daughters died aged eighteen at Wilne.

James and Jane appear to have lived at Draycott for the rest of their lives. Jane died in 1831, aged 79. James survived her by five years. He died at the age of 84 and was buried at Wilne on 6th December 1836.
