Went to California as a young boy during the gold rush. 1850 Owned a traveling saw mill. A traveling circuit judge in Kentucky (never proven)


Catherine Davis Chaplin as told by WTD 1850 - covered wagon to CA; apprenticed to farmer 18years old, horse, rifle, $100 walked across isthmus of Panama - home by river system Civil war - Morgan's men, flamboyant rebel leader; gorillas robbing banks - Morgan's raiders. Jim Davis never eat a chicken unless paid for prisoner at Camp Douglas, south side of Chicago, private portable saw mill Papa (RCD I) drove teams of oxen; built RR bridges three wives: don't know name of wife #3 (son Charles?) Papa's step brother (Cyrus) came to Papa's funeral


Original letter from James Davis to brother May 26, 1850 from "Fort Skerney" 350 miles from Independence (probably Fort Kearney on the Oregon Trail)


Squire's wife Jessie says in letter (Jan 1947 to WTD via registered mail) that James was a good friend of James B. McCreary who later became governor of Kentucky
