James, a farmer, was born in 1815 in North Yorkshire, the youngest child of John Cundall and Rebecca Fryer.

James married Ellen Ascough on Saturday 1 December 1838 in Kirkby Malzeard, near Ripon. The witnesses at the marriage were Thomas Cundall (James' elder brother) and John Kay.

James and Ellen raised seven children together, four daughters and three sons.

After Ellen died in 1876, James remarried a local Dallowgill woman named Elizabeth however further details are not known.

James died at the age of 80 on Tuesday 21 July 1896 in Lunterstone, Dallowgill. He was buried alongside Ellen and their son Matthew the following Friday in St Peter's Church, Plot 9.

His gravestone has the following inscription:
