ooking for information on JAMES CORWIN, born about 1800 in PA, died between 1870/1880 in Belle Vernon, Fayette County PA. Wife was SARAH CORWIN, born about 1798 in PA, died between 1860/1870 in Belle Vernon PA. There were several James CORWIN in Belle Vernon during that time frame, and many Corwins from well researched lines, but I cannot connect JAMES to any of the them. JAMES CORWIN was a carpenter/boat builder who resided in Monongahela City Borough, Washington County in 1850, Washington Township, Fayette County in 1860, and Belle Vernon, Fayette County in 1870. Children of JAMES and SARAH CORWIN were PETER, ESTHER, ELIZABETH, THOMAS, MARY, JOHN, SARAH E. AND MARY E. Son PETER married MARY J WILKIN. ESTHER never married, lived in California, Washington County and raised niece Ellen M. McClure. THOMAS married ISABELLA GEORGE 24 Dec 1854 near Monongahela City, Washington County and died 17 April 1900 in West Elizabeth, Allegheny County (my 2nd Great-Grandparents)! . MARY married a MCCLURE and resided with father JAMES in 1870 Belle Vernon but may have died before 1880. I have no further information on the other children of James and Sarah. Morris Corwin, John W's paternal grandfather, came to Fayette county at an early day and engaged as cooper. His wife was Mary Smock, daughter of Barnet Smock, who lived to be ninety seven years of age, and had an odd collection of bonnets representing all the styles in vogue during a period of one hundred years. ________________________________________________________________________ I have have a bit of info that hopefully can help some of "us" Corwins. Spring 1816, Morris Corwin came from Westmoreland Co, Pa. Built on Main St. in BelleVernon Pa. , Fayette Co. He died in 1835- his widow lived past 90. His wife was Mary smock(aunt Polly), b.1/4/1791. and d. 1/6/1888, they were married inn 7/1807 in Brownsvillle, Pa. Her parents were Barnett Smock and Jane Berdine, BelleVernon, Pa. Their children were Barnet, James Viril, John and William. John m. in 1825 to Jane Patterson daughter of Matthew Patterson from Washington Co., Pa.She died in Green Co. Indiana in 1886 and John died in Morgan Co., Oh. Their children were Mary Elizabeth, James B, Eliza, John Ebbert, Clarissa (Clara), Anna Melissa,Robert Patterson, Matthew Corwin, Isabel Corwin. Also related is Henry Curwen of Workington Hall County of Cumberland born 12/5/1783 he married in 10/11/1804. I also have Hanna Goldsmith wife of Ichabod case, mother of Keziah Case Corwin, d. Warren Co, Oh. in 1816. Most info can be found in J.S. Van Voorhis scraps of local society. Also look in Census-1790, #of Corwins in Pa., Or 1810 Montgomery Co. , John Corwin, Census- 1860 Kennonsburg, Wayne twnsp, Noble Co. Oh.Census- July 17, 1870 Summerfield, Wayne Twnsp. Noble Co. Also have names for Dr. Luther A Corwin b. 2/25/1860, d.1932, m. Ida and then Nelle. Also, Freeling Addison Corwin, b. 4/7/1866 and d. 5/14/1936. I have so much more info and thousands of names b-dated, marriages and dates of death and it all goes from Pa., Oh. into Ind. and so on.
Barnet Corwin was born in Westmoreland county, Penna, in 1814 and was by trade a ship carpenter. He married Nellie Call, daughter of Daniel Call, who was a weaver by trade. John W Corwin was raised at Belle Vernon and was educated there. When twenty years of age he learned the trade of engineer and continued in that business for sixteen years. In 1870 he engaged in the grocery and bakery business in which he has continued successfully ever since. He was married June 21, 1866, to Miss Margaret Jacobs, daughter of William Jacobs. They have one child, a son, Edgar Corwin, born May 14, 1867, married to Miss Araminta Clegg, daughter of John S Clegg, and is engaged in the glass business. John W Corwin is one of the substantial citizens of Belle Vernon, has never sought office, but has filled several positions of trust and responsibility of his borough, and is a member of the Free will Baptist church. ______________________________________________________________________ |
