OBITUARY

                                            REV. JAMES H. BURNS
    The Rev. James H. Burns, 68, first pastor of St. James' parish who built the

church and rectory while he served there 13 years, died yesterday at the home of a brother Robert F. Burns of 1201 W. Onondaga st.

    He has served St. James parish from July 12, 1925, until March 26, 1938

when he resigned due to ill health. He had been confined to his home since then.

    Born in 1882 in Canada he was a son of Patrick and Julia Powers Burns. He

was educated in Syracuse schools. He attended Niagara University and St. Barnard's Seminary, Rochester. He was ordained June 10, 1910.

    His first assignment was assistant pastor of St. Anthony's parish, Syracuse,

where he served until 1915. Then he became assistant in St. Patrick's Church, Oriskany Falls, in November 1922.

    Father Burns served as chaplain of the American Legion, the Knights of Columbus and the Catholic Daughters.
    In 1922 the late bishop Daniel J. Curley assigned him to supervise the $2000 campaign for the Home for the Aged, known as Loretto Rest.  After that he was directed to establish the new parish of St. James in Onondaga Valley.
    Surviving are two brothers, Robert F. and Edward J. Burns of Syracuse, two sisters, Miss Mary H. Burns and Mrs. Alfred Pratt of Saranac Lake; a nephew, Robert J. Burns and two nieces, Mrs. William J. Murphy of Syracuse, and Mrs. Elizabeth Kinville of Saranac Lake.
    The body will be taken to the Church of Most Holy Rosary at 4:00 p.m. Tuesday and priests of the diocese will chant the office of the dead at 7:45 p.m. Tuesday.  A solemn pontifical mass of requiem will be celebrated by Bishop Walter A. Forey at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday.
