    Early in the Eighteenth Century, there came to Beaufort County, N. C, three brothers surnamed Bonner, their Christian names being Thomas, James and William. They came directly from the State of Maryland where they had sojourned possibly some years, having emigrated from England. ...

    ... James settled the Town of Washington in Beaufort Co., N. C* which before its charter was known as Pea Town. He died unmarried and was buried on his premises, the spot being on what is now the south portion of Main Street just East of Bonner Street ; when Main Street was extended beyond and just East of Bonner St., his remains were removed to the extreme South west corner of the present Episcopal Church yard and cornered by Main and Bonner Streets. The inscription plate has been displaced from the flat stone over his remains hence we have no accurate date. ...
