My great-grandfather James Thomas Bailey was born on 17th February 1861 at
the Greengate district of Salford. He was the son of railway porter Robert
Bailey and Mary Ann Cuthbertson who had moved to Salford from the Clitheroe
area. At the time they lived at 33 Rosamund Street, Salford. In 1861 he is
living at Salford with his parents and sisters 8 year old Mary Ann (185?
Salford) and 5 year old Lucy (1856, Salford).
In 1871 James Thomas is living at Salford with his parents and brothers and
sisters Elizabeth (1868, Salford), Francis M (1851, Manchester), Hannah
(1866, Salford), Mary Ann (1853, Salford), Robert (1864, Salford).
In 1881 20 year old railway clerk James Thomas Bailey is living at 8 Calder
Street, Salford with his widowed mother Mary Ann Cuthbertson and brothers
and sisters

Lucy E, 22 year old cotton weaver Agnes J, 17 year old railway clerk
Robert, 15 year old cotton weaver Hannah, 13 year old scholar Elizabeth, and
28 year old widowed cotton weaver daughter Mary Ann Foster.
In 1889 28 year old clerk James Thomas Bailey married 20 year old Emily
Higgins on 25th December at St Clements Church, Salford. His father is
named as deceased carter Robert Bailey and her father is named as farmer
Thomas Higgins. They were both living at 168 Trafford Road. Witnesses were
Robert Smith and Elizabeth Bailey.
In 1891 30 year old railway guard James Thomas Bailey is living at 72
Halliwell Road, Salford together with his 22 year old wife Emily Higgins
(1869, Ludlow) and 6 month old daughter Florence (1891, Salford).

Emily Higgins is listed as a 20 year old spinster, living at the same address. Her father, Robert Higgins, is listed as a farmer. The marriage is witnessed by Robert Smith and Elizabeth Bailey (sister).
