James William ALSTON (b.18mar1796 Stockbriggs, Glasgow, also latter day saints) was son of William Alston (b. abt 1756 Glasgow) and Jean BROWN (who’s father James was born at Auchlochan House). William Alston was born 30apr1763 Glasgow, died 16nov1835 Glasgow. James William Alston married Margaret Hamilton Stirling 15feb1835 at Cardross, Dunbartonshire, and 19feb1835 at Barony parish; the latter record gives Margaret’s father as William Stirling (IGI). Information from K. Bryant-Smith (rootsweb): James William Alston died 25jan1866 at Glasgow. William Alston, born in 1763, a merchant in Glasgow, third flat, Turner's Land, Argyle Street, in 1789. He married Jean, daughter of James Brown of Auchlochan, and had issue, Isabella, who married H. W. Garden, died in America in 1864; and James William, afterwards of Stockbriggs, who married first Marion Cross (see Auchintoshan), and had issue, Jane, unmarried, Anna Boiling, married to Professor J. B. Cowan, M.D., and William; and secondly Margaret Hamilton Stirling (see Craigton), and had issue, James, John Stirling, who bought Stockbriggs from his half-brother William, and others. Mr. Alston of Stockbriggs died in 1866 (Old country houses of the old Glasgow gentry). In the year 1828, the heirs of Corbett of Stockbriggs sold the estate to John Gibson, Esq., Procurator-Fiscal at Lanark, who soon after disposed of it to James W. Alston, Esq., merchant in Glasgow, the present proprietor. Mr. Alston has erected a. substantial mansion-house, and has very much beautified and improved the estate (Annals of Lesmahagow). In 1841 James W. Alston (b. 1801 Lanarkshire), independent, Margaret (b. 1816 outside census county) and the following, born in Lanarkshire: Jane (1826), Anne (1827), William (1828), Margaret (1836), James (1838) John (1840) and 9 servants were at Stockbriggs, Lesmahagow, Lanarkshire (census). It is interesting that James William Alston (b. 1796), his father William, William James Martin (b. 1853), his mother, and Harold Frank Spens Black (b. 1858) lived at various times at Stockbrigg House, Lesmahagow. Scottish archives have the trust disposition and inventory of James William Alston, esq. of Stockbriggs near Lesmahagow, spouse of Margaret Hamilton Stirling, eldest son is William Alston, reg. 2jul1866; also the will of Margaret Hamilton Alston or Stirling, residing at St. Andrews House, Ayr, widow of James William Alston of Stockbriggs, d. 28jul1891 at Ayr, reg. 1891 Ayr (scotlandspeople).
