    Deed dated 2 March 1835:
    Know all men by these presents that I James Allen of Conewango, Cattaraugus County and State of New York, in consideration of Forty Dollars paid me by John Sweet of East Greenwich, County of Kent and State of Rhode Island, the receipt whereof I do hereby acknowledge, have remised released and forever Quitclaimed and do by these presents remise release and quitclaim unto him the said John Sweet all my right title interest and demand in and with to one certain tract or parcel of land lying partly in West Greenwich in the County of Kent and partly in Exeter in the County of Washington ... bounded ... Northerly on land late given by will of Benjamin Tillinghast, Esq. deceased, to my mother Sarah Allen ... that I Hannah Allen, wife of the said James Allen, do by these presents and for the consideration aforesaid yield up and surrender all my right of dower and power of thirds in and unto the above described land and premises unto him the aforesaid John Sweet. ...

    An old History of Cattaraugus County, published 1893, gives a short sketch of a number of the first settlers of this town, and the following items is as it apprears in the History:
    James Allen, son of Joseph and Sarah Allen, was born in Rhode Island and came to the town in 1830. He died in Clear Creek on March 2, 1854. His first wife was Hannah Townsend [who] bore him these children: Ripley T., Sarah A., James P. and Henry. Mr. Allen married second Terzah Townsend, by whom he had one son, Mason [sic]. His third wife was Emily Farnham, who was the mother of his youngest son, Charles T. Henry Allen owns and occupies the paternal homestead.
    James and his family are buried here in our cemetery. There is a lovely large monument and eight markers on the lot. ... information as it appears on the monument:
    James Allen died March 2, 1854 age 63 years
    Hannah Allen, wife of James, died Oct. 6, 1838 age 39 years
    Henrietta, daughter of James and Hannah, died Sept. 28, 1836 age 7 years
    Sarah Ann, daughter of James and Hannah, died Sept. 1868 age 45 years
    Ripley, son of James and Hannah, died July 25, 1893 age 72 years
    Henry, son of James and Hannah, died Jan. 23, 1908 age 81 years
    Mason [sic], son of James and Terzah, born Dec. 2, 1839, died Feb. 15, 1931
    Ann Sage, wife of Mason, born July 3, 1839, died Aug. 21, 1913.

    The Surrogate records of Cattaraugus County contain a petition dated 22 March 1854 by James P. Allen, 29 years of age, of Conewango, for the appointment of a guardian for the minor children of James Allen, late of Conewango, who died March 2, 1854. The petition names Mason, aged 14, Charles aged 12, and the court appointed Reuben Penhollow as the guardian.
    Others listed in the petition were Emily Allen of Conewango; Ripley T. Allen of St. Charles, Kaw Co., Illinois, aged 34; Sarah Ann of Conewango aged 31; and Henry of Conewango, aged 27.
