James Adams, Jr. served as a Minuteman from Fluvanna County, Virginia under Captain Roger Thompson in late 1777 and served six months. He was a Sergeant from Charlotte County, Virginia in 1781 and served four months. He moved to Elbert County, Georgia in 1796 with his family near Coldwater Creek on the road leading from Double Bridges to Concord Church in the Centerville District. The Adams burial ground is about two hundred yards from the road in front of the home site. He was the first school teacher in the district. He received a pension in his old age and was totally blind for several years before he died. The Stephen Heard Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution placed a marker in the memory of James Adams, Jr. in the Coldwater Church Cemetery.

James Adams Will 1835. In the name of God Amen. James Adams of the state of Georgia Elbert County be well in health as common and enjoying the blessings of my reasons and in perfect mind and memory I do make and ordain this my last will and testament. First my body to the earth and my soul unto the hands of God who gave it a touching the concern of this world when with it has pleased God to bless me in my old age with three tracts of land lying in the last purchase I give and devise and dispose of the same with 2 other draws as follows. First it is my desire and my will to give to my son John C. Adams who has taken care of me in my old age my land as follows. The first lot lying and being in the 15 district of the 3 section & the 24 number of said district and section also the second lot in the 20 district of the said section the 61st number of the said district and section also the 3 lot in the 18th district of the 3 section and the 174th number of said district a gold lot 40 acres with my other 2 draws yet not drawn with all the land lots or gold lots that I have drawn and I may draw of any district, section or number also it is my desire he, the said John C. Adams shall have an equal part with my other children of the rest of my estate. There is William Adams, Samuel Adams, Ann T. Gaines, Jane Teasley, Elizabeth Scales and John C. Adams. I give an equal share of my estate except those lots and draws that I have given to my son John C. Adams. Also it is my desire that John C. Adams and Lawrence M. Adams my lawful executors to this my last will and testament and by these present I do ratify and confirm and ordain this my last will and testament revoking and disanulling any and all other bequeaths or will by me in any wise made heretofore in witness whereof I have set my hand and seal this 26th of February 1835. Georgia Court of ordinary September Term 1841. Elbert County Personally came into open Court James Adams Memory Thornton and Samuel Adams, and being sworn saith that they were present and saw James Adams sign and seal & acknowledge this foregoing instrument of writing as his last will and Testament and that they assigned the same as witnesses at the request of the Testator and in his presence and that they believe the Testator to have been of Sound mind and memory at the time he executed the same.
