AKA John Kiefer (See, e.g., 1905 Wisconsin census)
The 1900 census shows he was born in September 1865, immigrated to the United States in 1884, and was naturalized in Pennsylvania. I recall my father saying the ancestors on the Kiefer side of the family were from near Baden-Baden in Baden-Wurttemberg.
The Baden-Wurttemberg Emigration Records show only the following Jakob Kiefers emigrating between 1873 and 1884:
1881 - Jakob Kiefer of Karlsruhe (Rupurr)
1881 - Jakob Ernst Kiefer of Karlsruhe (Rupurr)
1881 - Jakob Ernst Kiefer of Karlsruhe
1883 - Jakob Kiefer of Karlsruhe (Knielingen)
1883 - Jakob Kiefer of Karlsruhe (Knielingen)
1884 - Jakob Kiefer of Rastatt (Niederbuehl)
1884 - Jakob Kiefer of Rastatt (Niederbuehl), a tailor born on 28 April 1866
1884 - Jakob Kiefer of Rastatt (Niederbuehl)
Niederbuehl is less than 10 miles northwest of Baden-Baden and about 20 miles south of Karlsruhe. Karlsruhe is a much bigger city than Baden-Baden, so someone from Karlsruhe is not likely to say they are from near Baden-Baden.
