JACOB WELTY, farmer, P. O. Canal Dover, was born in Dover Township, Tuscar awas Co., Ohio, in 1817. His great-grandfather was a native of Switzerlan d, whence he emigrated at an early time, and settled in the wilds of Penns ylvania, and from him the succeeding generations sprang. Abraham and Eliza beth (Overalt) Welty, the parents of our subject, were both natives of Pen nsylvania, and came to the West in 1813, settling on 160 acres of la nd in Dover Township, Tuscarawas County. Abraham was a Mennonite preache r, and held divine service throughout the various settlements in the count ry. Here they together passed the remainder of their life's journey, attai ning old and respected ages. They raised a family of five sons and four da ughters, three of whom are living. viz., Jacob, Sarah (wife of John Ruper t) and Anna (wife of John Buzzard, of Elkhart County, Ind.). The subje ct of this sketch was born on the homestead farm, and is among the olde st living born settlers of the county; be has always resided on the ho me of his father's selection. He was married in this county, September 1 5, 1839, to Miss Barbara, daughter of David Miller, of Holmes County, Ohi o, and a native of Pennsylvania. Eight children have blessed this union, f our of whom are living, their names as follows: David M., John, Barbara a nd Mary. Mr. Welty is connected with the Mennonite Church, and ranks amo ng the distinguished pioneers of the county.
