In the course of working on an immigration reform educational module, I went to the Ellis Island web site. I didn't know they had a web based search facility, so I plugged in what I knew of my paternal grandfather and found the immigration records immediately - Jakob Vander Meulen, age 42, arrived on The "Rotterdam" on May 17, 1909 with his wife, Tietje, age 33 and 3 children - Anna (15), Pieter (4), and Tryntie (2). They were headed to Randolph, Wisconsin. Their passage had been paid by Jakob's brother in law, T. Westra of Randolf. They all came from the town of Hantum, Holland sailing from Rotterdam. Their closest relative in Holland appears to be: L. Van der Meulen of Osten Nykerk... This must be Jakob's brother, Lolke. There are some notes on the manifest that I cannot decipher... NOTE: The spelling on the Ellis Island documents spell Jacob with a "K" and they have put the van der into Vander...
