From Van Benschoten Book Jacob V.B. was a farmer and intent on his business; he lived at New Kingston, N.Y. In 1870 he took a prospecting trip into the west, but returned from it the better satisfied with his old home. He m 1st, in 1846, Barbra Johnston of Bovina, b. Dec. 28, 1816, d. Nov 28, 1887. He m. 2nd, Jan 12, 1892, Emma Bieghler. He d. Sep. 30 1895 From ---The History of Delaware County, W.W. MUNSELL 1797-1880 NELSON VAN BENSCHOTEN is a descendant of the family of that name who settled on the relief lands in this town after the burning of Kingston. His brother, Jacob, was one of the citizens who volunteered to protect the people at the time of the anti-rent excitement. Nelson owns a fine farm, and is largely interested in raising capons for the New York market. From "The Long Papers, Historical Sketches of The New Kingston Valley" by Lincoln R Long (1861-1927) first published in Catskill Mountain News in 1925 "William was born in 1800. He inherited the homestead and to him were born seven children. The eldest, Jacob, was the father of William Van Benschoten, who lived on the turnpike near Dunraven; Alexander who lives below the village of New Kingston; and Almira, the widow of James A Scott. " |
