Facts and Events
Born in house 44 Niedermollrich on March 6 in the morning. Baptized on March 20. Godfather was Jacob Gude, plowman (small farmer) from Rhunda, brother of the mother. Father, Johannes, was member of the community council. (All USA documents including pension records put his birth date at 6 May. To the immigration officials, Marz must have looked like May.) Immigrated to Muscatine, Iowa in 1853 with mother Anna Martha and two brothers John and Henry. USA records indicate Jacob came from Mellrich or Nieder Melrich (Civil War enlistment record) or Niedermullrick (pension record). However, the German records of the time indicate the town was named Neidermollrich as it is in contemporary Germany.
Oral tradition has it that one of the brothers came first on a cattle boat in 1851. It would have to have been John as Jacob would have been only 12 and Henry only 5. John would have been 16 in 1851. Still young, so there is some doubt to the story.,
