Facts and Events
Jacob Hanson Myhre, along with his wife Mathea emigrated in 1867 coming to Lanesboro, Minnesota, where they settled on a farm and for fifteen years he resided there attempting to raise his family despite year after year of grasshopeer infestations that stripped his fields of his harvest. In 1876 his wife died in childbirth and she and the child were buried at Lanesboro by the graves of three other infants who had died in the previous years. Six years later in 1882, Jacob decided to try his luck in the Dakota territory so with his nine-year-old twin sons and his seven-year old daughter, he started off in a covered wagon with his household goods, twenty head of his cattle, etc. on that long trip that took him twenty days. On the way, they stopped for a drink of water at a log cabin on the Cheyenne River and there found that dreaded disease, diphtheria. The twin sons died of it and were buried along the river. He continued on with his daughter Janna to an area north of what became Binford in what was then Dakota Territory. He dug out the side of a hill a rough and primitive home for them and they lived in it for many years until he could construct a home. Jana married in 1896 to Mathias Rorvig and the farm became known as the Rorvig farm. On June 13, 1982 the Rorvig family celebrated the 100th Anniversary of the farm.
