Facts and Events
The earliest record that I found of Jacob and Anna Detzler in North America was the date that they arrived in New York on the ship Rockingham. That was 17 Aug of 1836. The family is listed as follows Jacob, age 45, Anna age 40, Catharina age 19, Margaretha age 17, Anna Maria age 12, and Nicolas age 9. Next on the list was Nicolas Wagner age 33, Barbara age 23, Susanna age 25, Catharina age 5, Margaretha age 3, and Susanna age 1. Jacob lists himself as a farmer from Prussia headed for Ohio. Nicolas Wagner lists the same information. They must of changed their minds about Ohio because the next record found was in Buffalo, Erie Co., N.Y. on 26 April 1838 when their daughter Catharina married Casper Meyer at St. Louis Church. The next record was contained in the records of St. Agatha church in St Agatha, Wilmot Twp, Waterloo Co., Ontario Canada. This record was the marriage of their daughter Margaretha to Anton Hergott on 10 Nov 1840. We found a land purchase in 1843. It was in Wilmot Twp., Section B, Con 2, Lot 17. We, also found Jacob and Anna in Wilmot Twp. in the 1851 Census. We found Jacob's naturalization papers recorded on the 9th day of July 1857 County of Waterloo. "Whereas Jacob Detzler formerly of Prussia and now of the County of Waterloo Canada hath complied with The Several requirements of a certain Act of the Parliament of this Province paped in the Twelfth Year of the Reign of Her Majesty Queen Victoria, ______, An Act to repeal a certain Act therein mentioned and to make better provision for the Naturalization of Aliens, as amended by a certain other act paped in the Eighteenth Year of the Reign of her Majesty _______ an Act to amend the Naturalization Laws of this Province and the certificate thereof has been this day read in open court and there upon by order of the said court duly filed of record in the same pursuant to the direction of the said Acts. _____ ______ therefore to certify all whom it may concern that under and by virtue of the said Acts the Said Jacob Detzler hath obtained all the rights and capacities of a Natural Born British Subject within the Province to have hold possess and enjoy the same _____ limits there of upon from and after the Eighth day of July in the year of Our Lord one thousand eight hundred and fifty seven and this certificate thereof is hereby granted to the said Jacob Detzler according to the form of the Statutes in such case made and provided under my hand and of the said court this Eighth day of July in the year of Our Lord One thousand eight hundred and fifty seven." Jacob died two years later. The following is a quote from St. Agatha Chruch records given to me by Donna Haid about Jakob Detzler "died in his own home..who the same day before he died, received the Last Rites" Underlined in the records: "He was truly a holy man" Our search for the Detzler family history began when my cousin Tari McClain and I traveled to Kitchener, Ontario in May of 1997 to visit relatives and do research. While attending a birthday party for Marie and Clarence Voisin grandson, Marie introduced us to the mother-in-law of her daughter and told her that we were doing research on the Mier/Meir family. She mentioned that her niece was researching the Detzler family. We were very excited and got the chance to meet with Donna Detzler Haid at the home of her parents for a couple of hours. She had written a book, but did not have any more copies. We were disappointed, but at least we now have a new cousin that is working on our family. She has been to Germany to the Detzler farm, and it is still owned by Detzler's. She was able to give me the information on the ancestors of Anna. I visited Kitchener again in August of 97, met with Donna, went to St. Jerome College to look through the records of St. Agatha Parish starting in 1837. It was a good thing she was able to go with me, as all the records were in Latin and German. They were difficult to read, but with her help we got through most of the records. She also had more information on the Detzler and Riehm families back to the 1600's from a cousin in Germany In 1998 Tari and I were invited to a cookout at the home of Donna and Ray Haid in St. Clements, Ontario. There we met our Detzler cousins from Germany they presented us with a plate with the Detzler Coat of Arms on it. It was a wonderful day. References
