HETTY [CRIST] BURKHOLDER

Hettie/Hetty/Heddy Crist (born 1786) was probably the youngest daughter of Andrew and Elizabeth Crist of Rockingham and Augusta Counties, VA. According to Crist researchers, she was married to Jacob Christian Burkholder. According to Richard Warren Davis, researcher of Mennonite emigrant families, Christian Burkholder (born c1782) was the son of the Mennonite Jacob Burkholder (b. c1743). A comprehensive account of the Mennonite Burkholder Family is on file in Mr. Davis's website at www.MennoSearch.com. Below is a condensed sketch of the Jacob Burkholder family from one of Mr. Davis's files:

Jacob Burkholder, b. c1743, Lancaster County. d. 1823, Rockingham County, Virginia. He married Barbara Brenneman, daughter of Adam Brenneman of Conestoga Township on 1 Aug 1769 at Lancaster. He lived at Lower Chanceford Township, York County, Pennsylvania in 1790. He moved to Rockingham County in 1793.

5. Susanna Burkholder, b. c1780. md Joseph Blain.
6. [?] Christian Burkholder, b. c1782. d. 1824. md Hettie.
7. Barbara Burkholder, b. c1784. md Henry Neff.
8. Samuel Burkholder, b. 1789. md Elizabeth Good."

Although Christian Burkholder and Hetty Crist were probably Mennonites by birth, Andy Leath has stated in recent messages to this list that some of their children were probably Presbyterian:

"Interestingly, most of Hetty's children ended up Presbyterians in Augusta Co.!"

"The evidence I have for Hetty's children being Presbyterians is not until the 1830s, when their marriage records show them married by Presbyterian ministers. Also several of them are buried in Presbyterian church cemeteries."

Land, tax, census, and estate records concerning the family of Christian and Hetty [Crist] Burkholder are given in the MennoSearch website mentioned above.
