Was a farmer and lived in Bedford Twp., then moved to Colerain Twp., and lived the remainder of their days. Jacob was in the battle of the Wilderness, he was a brave and gallant soldier, and was discharged Apr 22, 1865 after the close of the war. A member of G.A.R. and elected Director of the Post in Bedford Co., in 1891.

Per Bedford 1850 Census age of Jacob is 37 (b. abt. 1813); Other family records say he was b. in 1811. He also owned Real Estate valued at 2,000.

1860 Census shows Jacob's mother Margaret living in his household; Also shows Sarah A. Layton age 15, as Domestic help.
