About Jackson S. "Jack" Page
Jackson Samuel "Jack" Page was born 26 March 1915 in New Mexico, the son of Terry Page [1869-1943] and his wife Celia Moack [1873-1940], both natives of Kentucky. He went to grade school in Texas and came to California with his parents in 1926. Jack started his career in the food business when he was in the 8th grade in Temple City, California in an independent grocery store and later worked for a drug store and for Van De Kamp's Bakery.
According to the 1940 U.S. Census records, Jack completed four years of college and was then working as a mail clerk for a wholesale grocer, and indeed according to an October 1963 article in Deli World magazine, Jack completed his first two years of college at Pasadena City College, completed his education at the University of Southern California, graduating in June 1942, with a degree in Business Administration, with a major in Marketing. At the time, he was working part time for wholesale grocer Certified Grocers, now known as Unified Grocers.
On 5 August 1942, Jack Page enlisted for military service and served for 4½ years during World War II, after which he returned to Certified Grocers, working full-time as head of the Mailing Department. . In 1949, Certified entered the frozen food business, and Jack was chosen by Certified's then Chairman, Murray Yunker to help set up the Frozen Food Department, and rose from Clerk to become Certified's first Frozen Food Manager. In preparation for Certified's entry into the frozen food category, Jack was sent to several other retail and wholesale operations across the countty to help him put an implementation plan together. Jack became known as Certified's "Frozen Food expert" and was instrumental in convincing many early frozen manufacturers to switch over from a predominently DSD [Direct Store] delivery model to the warehouse distribution model used today to get most frozen products to the store shelves. One of the first early manufacturers to switch over with Jack's convincing was Birds Eye Foods, then one of the pioneer manufacturers in the frozen food category.
Jack married on 31 July 1954 in Los Angeles County, California to Rose Marie Testa [who was then 29 years old according to California, Marriage Index, 1949-1959]. Jack Page passed away on 26 September 1992 when living in Whittier, Los Angeles County, California at age 77.
