My g-g-grandfather was (depending on who you ask) either born and raised on a plantation, until after the civil war, born on a plantation but not raised on one, or none of the above. Everyone agrees that he was white http://i739.photobucket.com/albums/xx40/... according to those who knew him he said he was half scot-irish (mother) and half Cherokee, he had grayish blue eyes and blonde hair that he would dye brown, and his last name was Cargle.
Problems- he went to a white formal school but dropped out and was tutored by an aunt who was black. He identified as black or mulatto, and in his teens he lived with relatives (he never knew or didn't remember his parents) who identified as black and were former slaves (some say otherwise) and had the same last name but they came from a plantation in Georgia. Each time he married, the women were black (which I'm sure was illegal, if he was just white).
1.Were half Native American, half European American children called mulatto or sometimes black in the late 1800's/early 1900's?
2. What conclusion would you make from that story in regards to his admixture and such. I think he may have been a "quadroon" (1/4 black). Most family members stick to the half white/ half cherokee story and everyone else believes he was half black, half white (slave owner/slave thing). He had 3 siblings, all "looked white" all married blacks. Update: My relative Jackson M. Cargle.
There is debate as to what his admixture is. He said he was white and cherokee, but he was raised with "black" relatives in black areas and only married blacks, and identified as either black or mulatto.
I was seeing if that story made sense to anyone.
