Jack was a race car driver, on 22 Jun 1947 he was involved in an accident with Clay Corbitt at Salem Speedway, Indiana. Their cars had locked wheels two different times, the second time leading to both cars flipping repeatedly and leaving the track. Clay was killed instantly; Jack was paralyzed and lived in a great deal of pain for almost another five years.

Jack was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
