From "House with a Past" by Erik Barnouw, Vermont Historical Soc, Montpelier, 1992: "Probably the oldest convert to join the Benson exodus was Jabez Carter, whoe daughter Charity had married Ira Ames. Jabez, born in 1750 in Killingworth, had been among those migrating to Benson in 1786. In 1833, at eighty-three, he was ready to embark on a new and more extraordinary mighration. On the day before John S. Carter headed west, Jabez became his final Benson convert. Likewise westward-bound were his sons Luman and Daniel, and of course Charity -- all Mormon converts. Old Jabez died in Kirtland in 1836; the others continued on their way.
