Sworn deposition of Nik Mirkovich of Port Blakeley, Kitsap Co., Washington, 18 Dec 1930, who resided in Kitsap Co continuously 19 years, laborer, age 56, born in Austria. First met Ivan in US when he came to my home in Eagle Harbor in 1914, I had previously known him in the old country. Attests that Ivan lived in King Co, Washington between summer 1925 to May 1926, then fishing in Alaska May thru Aug 1926, then left Washington in late Sept 1926. Attested good character and recommended for citizenship.
Sworn deposition of John Ugles of Winslow, Kitsap Co, Washington, 19 Dec 1930, who resided in Seattle from 1913 to fall 1926, and Winslow since then, fisherman, age 36, born in Jugoslavia. He met Ivan in 1913 in Seattle, good friends and intimate since, fished together, lived together three winters. Saw him often when not fishing. Ivan left Seattle for San Pedro in Sept 26. Attested good character and recommended for citizenship.

No nearest relative or friend in US. Record includes extra notation: "Arrived at New York as member of crew and deserted. Examined Seattle ?? 4/23/26 Bure?? letter 5/5/26 #55497/105 authorizes legalization residence nunc pro tunc." ("Nunc pro tunc" is a legal phrase meaning "now as then", used when a record is retroactively corrected.)

The 98-ton fishing boat New Conte de Savoia was built in 1937 by Harbor Boat Works, Terminal Island, for the New Conte de Savoia Fishing Corp., 378 18th St., San Pedro, homeported at Los Angeles, call sign WNUY. Purchased by the Navy on October 25, 1940, renamed Sanderling, and entered service on April 18, 1941, under Lt. Louis H. Gwinn, USNR. Operated in the 11th Naval District out of San Diego, and removed from service on Sept. 18, 1944. Registered in 1945 by Tony Russo, 378 18th St., San Pedro, California, as the 98-ton fishing boat New Conte de Savoia, homeported in Los Angeles, call sign WNUY. Registered in 1948 by Ivan Uglesich, 269 16th St., San Pedro, California, as the 98-ton fishing boat Yankee Boy, homeported in Los Angeles, call sign WNUY and WB5403 in 1949. Burned on January 20, 1950, about 5 miles off Dana Point, California. [Note that the Conte di Savoia was the name of the boat that Ivan and his new wife Antica took from Croatia to America in 1935.]
