Working Timeline

Abt 1770 - birth. Locations claimed include Alford, MA or Shaftsbury, VT. Rationale needed.

16 Jun 1791, Washington County, NY - marries Elizabeth Haskins

14 May 1793 - at a meeting of the Land Board for Leeds and Grenville counties, Israel is granted 170 acres, Lot 24 on Broken Front B, Wolford Twp. His land was triangular in shape and bordered by the River Rideau on two sides.

13 Aug 1793 – Israel petitions Gov. Simcoe for 200 acres of land in Grenville County, Ontario. He had been living in Augusta Twp. since 1792, one of the earliest settlers. In this petition he states that he is from Hampton [Washington county], New York and was now residing in Augusta, Grenville county, Ontario. [Upper Canada Land Petitions]

  • [Caution: citation needed. Why did he petition in August if he had already been granted land in May?]

1795 - Israel submits a petition to the Crown complaining that he had two times been burned out by the Indians, with loss of buildings, crops and threats of death if he returned. No compensation or assistance was given.

29 Jun 1796 - Israel is named in a “Return of the Lands Pitched on the West Half of the River Rideaux Eastern District”.

1797 - Israel had cleared 18 acres of Lot 24 Broken Front A.

1802 - Israel drowned when he fell through the ice on the River Rideau.

1 May 1802 - assessment records of Wolford Twp. show the widow Elizabeth Olmstead and her four children enumerated next to her parents, Joseph and Elizabeth Haskins, her brother Nicholas Haskins and her sister Lorana Barber.

Israel Olmstead was a son of Jedediah and Mehitable Olmstead of Hampton, Washington County, New York. Jedediah was a son of Jeremiah and Elizabeth Olmstead and a grandson of Captain Jabez and Thankful Olmstead of Ware, Massachusetts. Once again we have no vital records to verify the parentage of Israel, but this time there are documents that clearly give us his lineage. The first is a petition written by Israel himself to Governor Simcoe, found in the Upper Canada Land Petitions, It is dated the 13th of August 1793. Israel requested a grant of 200 acres of land in the County of Grenville or Leeds. In this petition he stated that he was from Hampton, New York and was now residing in Augusta, Grenville County, Ontario. It is this reference to Hampton that links him to Jedediah as this was the only Olmstead family in Hampton, enumerated there in the 1790 and 1800 census. [*]

The second document which further connects Israel to Jedediah is the Mormon “baptism of the dead” record filed by Moses Olmstead (wife Almira Seekins) in August of 1844. Moses named his dead parents as Jedediah and Mehitable and dead siblings as Israel, Polly, Betsey and Jedediah. [*] ...

[*cos1776 notes: There are some additional things to consider. The 1799 tax rolls show that there was also a "John Olmsted" listed alongside "Jedediah Olmsted" in Hampton. Also, Moses Olmstead's known birth date in 1794 makes him about 24 years younger than Israel. While not impossible, it suggest that either they are not siblings or perhaps Israel has a different mother.]
