There is some question about where she was born. While her death certificate, signed by her daughter, Bess Susan Rogers Durrett, says she was born in Missouri, the 1880 Grayson Co., TX, census shows she was born in Texas. The Vaughans were in Missouri (Jackson County) as late as 1868, when Asa was born. And in fact the 1870 Jackson County, MO, census, which was taken on August 23, 1870, did not mention Isabel Frances, who was born on July 22, 1869. Seems odd they would not have mentioned the baby. If this census was wrong, then Isabel Frances must have born in 1870, rather than 1869. It seems logical that the two census records are right, and Aunt Bess' information on her mother's birthdate was incorrect.

A DAY IN MOTHER ROGERS' LIFE* ---by Edna Louise Rogers Kindred (who lived with Mother Rogers for many years) She was always the first up in the morning. "Wanted to see what God had in store," she always said. She fixed breakfast, the most important meal of the day, oatmeal (hot) bacon and eggs, biscuits and gravy. Each meal was started with a prayer. She saw us all off with a smile, then she cleaned house and sewed on her treadle Singer machine or by hand. I had the prettiest graduation dress made by her hands. Then she fixed a big meal for supper and was there to hear all about our day. Mine at school and Aunt Bess and "Unc" (Uncle Herbert Durrett, Aunt Bess' husband) at work. After supper, I always got the pleasure of washing the dishes. She read her Bible and talked to me about life. I know that without her guidance and love I would not have made it through life as well as I have.

A TRIP TO LOY LAKE ---by Edna Louise Rogers Kindred In the summer months we went on picnic suppers at (nearby) Loy Lake. Mother Rogers fixed chicken, the very best, and we made potatoe salad, deviled eggs and green bean salad. Mother Rogers usually made a cake or we made cupcakes. Unc, Mother Rogers and I went to pick Aunt Bess up after work at Marks Bros. downtown then we drove to the lake. While Mother Rogers and Aunt Bess spread the meal, Unc and I fished with cane poles. Boy, the "life back then." This is what memories are made of.
