Wade, Isaac - entered service 1777 in 14th Virginia Regiment, & served at Battles of Brandywine & Germantown; entered service 1781 in Bedford County, Virginia & wounded at Yorktown; died 8/9/1823; married 2/11/1779 to Polly Gibbs, widow of Thomas Stevens, Bedford County, Virginia; eldest son Jeremiah was born 1/18/1780; soldier's widow granted Pension there in 1839 at age 78, per witness Alexander Wade (no kinship given); son William W. Stevens* made affidavit there then that he was born 10/1776, per County Justice of the Peace Samuel P. Mitchell; John Arthur made affidavit there then age 80 that he resided all of his life there & he served in same Revolutionary War Company with soldier, per County Justice of the Peace Lewis C. Arthur; Mrs. Mary B. Ryan made affidavit there then age 78; Mary E. Wade made affidavit there then that she was the daughter of Samuel Mitchell who assisted soldier's widow in securing fodder during Revolutionary War; Jesse Witt made affidavit there then he entered service 1777 with soldier there in 14th Virginia Regiment, & they served together at Brandywine & Germantown, per County Justice of the Peace Frederick B. Anspaugh; Mrs. Mason Robinson made affidavit there then age 74, per witness George Sykes; query letter in file in 1939 from Mrs. Maude Wade Snider of Greencastle, Indiana, states soldier's brother Jacob entered service with soldier in Revolutionary War; query letter in file in 1928 from Mrs. V.C. Lancaster, Washington, D.C. F-W6389, R2466.

  • Note: William W. Stevens mentioned in this record was actually the step-son of Isaac Wade, he was the son of Isaac's wife Mary "Polly" Gibbs from her first marriage to Thomas Stevens.

    State of Virginia
    Bedford County to witt,
    On this 4 day of May 1839, personally appeared before me Saml P Mitchell a Justice of the the peace in and for said county Mrs Polly Wade aged 78 years old, a respectable resident of said county, who being first duly sworn according to law doth on her oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the provision made by the act of congress passed July 4 1836: That she is the widow of Isaac Wade also of said county who was a regular soldier in the Revolutionary War, that he Wade enlisted under captain Geo Lambert of said county in the beginning of the war, and must have served three years [two illegible words] his name is on the County Roll as being [illegible word] to [illegible word] – that after the said Isaac Wade had returned from said regular service (he having belonged in the [several illegible words] he married deponent (whose maiden name was Polly Gibbs, but was the widow of Thos. Stevens at the time) was married to said Isaac Wade on the 11 day of February 1779, and that the oldest child by Wade was born on the 18 of Feb 1780. That in the year 1781, and in [several illegible words] or latter part of August of that year the malitia [several illegible words] said county to go to little York to take Lord Cornwallis, and that her husband Isaac Wade aforesaid was one that went into service on said occasion. that it was in the fall of the year that he was [several illegible words] from Mr Sam’l Mitchell her neighbour in securing her fodder [several illegible words] of weather. that she has frequently heard her husband the aforesaid Isaac Wade speak of his being at the taking of Lord [three lines illegible] was married to the aforesaid Isaac Wade on the 11 day [several illegible words] that her husband the aforesaid Isaac Wade died on the 9 day of August 1823 and that she has remained a widow ever since that period as will more fully appear by reference to the [several illegible words]

    On this 3 day of May 1839, personally appeared before me Saml P Mitchell a Justice of the peace in and for said county Mrs. Mary B Ryon [or Ryan] a respectable resident of said county, who being first duly sworn, according to law, doth on her oath say – That she is 78 years. that she can say positively that Isaac Wade enlisted as a regular soldier under Captain George Lambert and she understood he served three years as a regular soldier in the revolutionary war – that he was at the Battles of Brandy-wine [Brandywine, 11 Sep 1777], Germantown [4 Oct 1777] &c to the north – that after he came out of the regular service he the said Isaac Wade was married to Miss Polly Gibbs (now Mrs. Polly Wade his present widow) on the 11 day of Febuary th 1779 and that his first child Jeremiah Wade was born on the 18 day of Jan’y 1780 – and that in th year 1781 and she thinks in the midlle or latter part of August, the malitia was called into service to go to Yorktown, and she recollects distinctly that Isaac Wade aforesaid (who married Polly Gibbs, now Polly Wade) went into service on said occasion, and as she understood from said Isaac Wade and others that he the said Isaac Wade was at the taking of Lord Cornwallis prisoner by Gen’l. Washington and that she recollects distinctly that it was in the fall of the year – for Mrs. Polly Wade his present widow had to get assistance from Mr. Samuel Mitchell in securing the fodder while her husband was in service on said occasion at the capture of Cornwallis – that said Isaac Wade had the misfortune to lose one of his legs many years before his death. That said Wade and his present widow Polly Wade lived together as man and wife untill his death which was on the 9 day of August 1823. that Mrs. Polly Wade has remained the the widow of said Isaac Wade dec’d. ever since the death of her husband aforesaid to the present time – and is the identical person who is now claiming a pension from the Gen’l. Government as the widow of the aforesaid Isaac Wade dec’d

Stevens a respectable resident of said county, who being first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath say – that he is 63 years old last October – that Isaac Wade married his mother, whose maiden name was Gibbs, on the 11 Feb’y 1779, that he has frequently heard Isaac Wade in his life time speak of his being at the capture of Lord Cornwallis – that he Wade said he saw Gen’l. Washington, and Lord, Cornwallis, meet on the the day that Cornwallis made his surrender – which was in October 1781 [sic: see note below]; that Mrs Polly Wade his present widow had to get help to plough her corn during his absence in service. that Wade and wife lived together as man and wife until his death, which was on the [blank] day of August 1823. that she has remained the widow of said Wade untill the present time, and is the identical person who is claiming a pension as the widow of said Wade.

    NOTE: Lord Corwallis, being indisposed, was not at the surrender ceremony at Yorktown on 19 Oct 1781, but assigned the task to his second in command.

    National Archives pension file W6389, for Polly Wade, widow of Isaac Wade. This application was approved, & Polly received $340 plus $40/year (as I understand it.) This file containsseveral papers, all are transcribed below, not in any particular order.
    State of Virginia Bedford County to witt, On this 3rd day of May 1839, personally appeared before me Saml. P. Mitchell a Justice of the peace in and for said county Mrs. Mary B.     Virginia At a Court of Quarterly Sessions continued and held for the County of Bedford at the Court house on Tuesday the 28th day of May one thousand eight hundred and thirty nine.
    The foregoing declaration of Polly Wade for a pension together with the affidavits of Mrs. [Mason?] Robinson, John Arthur, Mary B. Ryan, Mary E. Wade, Jesse [Will?] and William W. Stevens and the certificate of Peter [Haynes?] auditor, and of Samuel P. Mitchell, Frederic B. [A----paugh?] and Lewis C. Arthur, came this day produced in open Court, and thereupon the several being examined the Court doth order it to be certified to the War Office of the United States that the said Samuel P. Mitchell, Frederic B. [A-----paugh?] and Lewis C. Arthur are Justices of the peace in and for said County that their respective signatures to the certificate aforesaid and in their own hand writing and the proceedings aforesaid had by them in the County and thereby approved ratified and confirmed and the Court doth further certify that it appears to their satisfaction that Isaac Wade and the said Polly were lawfully married in this County on the 11th day of February 1779 (eleventh day of February one thousand seven hundred and seventy nine) and lived together as man and wife until the 9th day of August 1823 (ninth day of August one thousand eight hundred and twenty three) when the said Isaac Wade departed this life in this County. The maiden name of the said Polly Wade was Polly Gibbs. She first married Thomas Stevens who shortly died, and then she married the said Isaac Wade whose wwidow she now is - There is no record of marriages in the Office of this Court prior to 1780, and the Court doth further certify that it appears to their satisfaction that the said Isaac Wade was a Soldier in the Revolutionary War, that he first enlisted as a regular Soldier in the Army under Capt. George Lambert and served at least one year on [continental?] establishment if not longer - That after his return from this tour of duty he again went into service after his marriage with his present widow and served at least two months, being present and engaged in the battle of York-town in October 1781, and the Court doth further certify that the said Polly Wade is a lady of high standing and respectability and her oath entitled to full faith and credit and that she is unable from bodily infirmity to attend this Court in proper person and the Court doth further certify that the said Mason Robinson, John Arthur, Mary B. Ryan, Mary E. Wade, Jesse Will and William W. Stevens are each respectable residents of this County and their respective oaths entitled to full faith and credit.

Mitchell Clerk of the County Court of Bedford in the State of Virginia, do hereby certify that the foregoing is a true transcript from the records of said court. In testimony whereof I [ ? ] hereunto set my hand and affixed the seal of said Court the 28th day of May 1839 in the 63rd year of the Commonwealth.
