A slave named Belle, who later took the name Sojourner Truth, came to the home of Isaac Van Wagenen for refuge in 1826 after ill treatment from her owner, John Dumont. The Van Wagenens purchased her from her owner and freed her one year later. She became known as a preacher, a campaigner for women's rights, and an abolitionist.
