-Message: #7 Date: Wed, 12 Aug 1998 From: "Matthew Van Hook" <vanhook@@swconnect.net> Subject: RE: [TNWILSON-L] Reed/Vantrease/Welch/Bairds I have more on the Grandstaff line than Mary's. In fact, until now, I only had her name. Here is what I have from my notes on Isaac: There is an Isaac Granstaff listed in the 1830 Census for Wilson, Co, TN. It says he has 1 son under 5 years old; 2 sons between 10-15; 2 sons between 15-20; 3 sons between 20-30; He would be between 50 and 60 years old himself in 1830 From Thomas E. Partlow, Wilson County TN, Wills, Books 1-13, 1802-1850 (Easley, SC: Southern Historical Press, 1981: p. 132 Isaac Grindstaff Will, 2 Dec. 1840, heirs: wife Mary, sons: John, David, Isaac, William, Nicholas, James D., daughters: Nancy, Matilda, Frances, Katherine Wheeler, Polly Fite, Elizabeth Turner, Martha Hearn. Wits: Jacob Smith, William Boyd, William Vantrease. James Young, executor. Recorded 12/31/40 (p. 1456) Drake's History of Wilson County (1879), p. 13, lists Isaac Grandstaff as a pioneer settler to the "Three Forks" Settlement on Round Lick Creek in Wilson County, Tennessee. Much of his children could have been in Smith County because by an act of the General Assembly, November 6, 1801, a thick part of Wilson County was detached and annexed to Smith County, TN. If he was a pioneer settler, it is likely he was from North Carolina. Virginia is also a good possiblity. The area was first settled by William Harris and William McSpadden in 1799 from North Carolina and James Wrather and Samuel King from Virginia. (History of Wilson County, TN, Dixon Merritt, editor.] It is interesting to note that he named one of his sons (the only one listed) "William Bumpass Granstaff." William Bumpass was also in Wilson County. William Bumpass was from Smith's Fork (Statesville/Marysville) The first house built in Statesville was build by him. It was a 2-story log cabin about 1799-1804. He died about 1805. It was a tavern and the first post office was located in it. At one time it was painted and called the "Red House." It was torn down in 1947. William Bumpass was a revolutionary war veteran. Statesville, Wilson County's, 2nd oldest city was established as Marysville in 1812 in honor of William's wife Mary. Why Isaac named his son after him is unknown. I don't know what the relationship was. It would be useful to find out more about Mary Vantrease, Isaac's supposed wife from family recollection. It could be that Mary Vantrease is the grandaughter of William Bumpass and she named her son after him. Of course, this means that Mary was a daughter of a daughter of William Bumpass (prob. b. about 1729). The only daughter I am aware of are Elizabeth, Unknown, and Ann of which did not marry Vantreases. It could be that Isaac and William were merely friends, even though William was much older. From The History of Smith County, Tennessee (1987): "The name Grindstaff comes from the German spelling Crantzdorf. . . (Reeves, 92): He was on Carter Co., Tax List 1798; move with his family and that of Daniel Smith, to Wilson Co., in 1803. From The History of Smith County, Tennessee (1987): "Mary has been believed to have been a Smith, but in the Wilson Co. deeds there is a good reason to believe she was a Vantrease. In Wilson Co. in 1809 Johannes Vantrease deeded 187 acres to his son, Jacob, and an equal amount to Isaac Granstaff. Also the two families lived next to each in Carter Co., Tn. (1790 Tax list, Catherine Grindstaff lived next to John Vantrease. . ." p. 513 (F369). Descendants of Isaac Grindstaff 1 GRINDSTAFF, Isaac b: 1761-1774 in prob.
