Irma Ellen King, 100, Pierre, died Saturday, March 29, 2008, at Maryhouse TCU, Pierre. Visitation will be 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., Friday, April 4, 2008, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Feigum-VanLith Funeral Home, Pierre. Funeral service will be 10 a.m., Saturday, April 5, 2008, at First United Methodist Church, Pierre, with Rev. Howard Grinager officiating. Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery, Pierre. Irma Ellen Bliss was born June 21, 1907, to Bertha Ann Foster Bliss and Harry Cornelius Bliss, on a homestead in Burleigh County, N.D. She was the third in the family and the only girl. At a young age, Irma's brother became ill and they moved to Arkansas. A few years later, after her brother had died, they returned to South Dakota and settled in Pierre, where Irma attended school. Homesteads were still available in South Dakota and Harry found one in Rousseau Township, where he built a home and Irma and Howard traveled four miles to Rousseau to school. When Irma and her brother were ready for high school and younger brother Tasker for the first grade, the family moved to Canning. Irma was a conscientious student and made extra credits in debate and taking extra studies. She was an honor graduate in 1927, but chose marriage over a career, and became Mrs. Harold King, Sept. 18, 1927. The King's owned and operated a grocery store in Canning for 10 years before moving to Pierre in 1937 and establishing King's Korner Grocery.
While living in Pierre, Irma became active in many organizations.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church for 50 years as well as East Pierre Women's Club, helped organize the Oahe Riding Club, Sheriff's Posse and was made an honorary life member of the South Dakota Trail Riders. She was a member of the Night Writers and president of the Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of World War I.
Irma was inducted into the South Dakota Hall of Fame in September, 1990, in the category of Arts and Humanities. She was a member of DAR. She has published two short histories of the area, two books of poetry, two songs, children's stories and several articles for newspapers and magazines.
Irma is survived by her three children: Lorna DuBois, of Pierre, Roy W., of Florida, Barbara and her husband Fritz Job, of Tennessee; seven nieces and nephews; eight grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harold; an infant brother, Alvin; brothers Dean, Howard and Tasker; and a grandson, Dennis DuBois.
