Irene was born in Bonner Springs, Kansas 19 April 1899, to James M Campbell and Charlotte Mae Pontzius. Times were very hard for her family and as a result, her mother put her into a orphanage as she felt she couldn't take care of her with the basic necessities. Irene lived in various foster homes growing up. She managed to finish high school and was able to attend nursing college most likely as a result of financial aid from one of her foster families. Irene graduated with her R.N. degree from Nursing school in Woodward, Oklahoma. As a young girl she married Will Tuttle, but the marriage only lasted for a short time. After her divorce, she met Paul Richey and they were married in Shreveport, Louisiana 2 April 1931 as Paul had some family living in Shreveport. Irene and Paul lived on a dairy farm in the 1950's which was part of Paul's "John S. Richey" family head-right in Hopkins County Texas. During this time, her mother went to live with Paul and Irene on their farm, and eventually, her mother lived out her life in a nursing facility in Grand Saline, Texas. Paul's mother had other family living in Grand Saline which is probably why they chose a nursing facility in Grand Saline. About 1958 they moved to Dallas, Texas and Irene spent the rest of her active life working as a private duty nurse for Baylor Hospital. She nursed many well-to-do families in Dallas during her long career. Irene loved hankies, and she always wore one on her nursing uniform every day to work. As a result, she was given many handkerchiefs over the years. Paul Richey and her step-son-in-law, James Laycock made two large frames to hold her handkerchiefs, and she had many more that would not fit into the two frames. After she retired from Baylor hospital, they remained in Dallas. Irene loved to sew, cook, crochet, and knit and she made many things for her family over the years. Her husband, Paul, died of ill health in 1970 and in her latter years she lived alone, but near her step-daughter Ruth. She spent the final two years of her life in several nursing facilities and passed away 21 January 1984. Her step-daughter Ruth had passed away a year before she did. Her step-grand-daughter and other step-daughter, Tressie, were holding her hand. She was greatly loved by her family. Irene Richey was buried in Pine Forest, Texas beside her husband, Paul. They were married for 39 years. Image Gallery
