Notes on Ida Winfrey Ida's mother, Parthenia, died when Ida was seven. Parthenia's will named a Dr. R.J. Hill as Ida's legal guardian. He arranged for her to go to San Jose, California, to stay at a school/home. She was then adopted by the prominent H.H. Mason family of Niles, Ohio and assumed the name, Ida Winfrey Mason. Ida maintained ties with the Mason family throughout her life. It seems clear from Parthenia's will that there was property, as well as a cemetery lot in St. Louis, which she wished Ida to inherit. However, it seems equally clear Dr. Hill was the primary beneficiary of anything intended for Ida. Shortly after Ida married Rolla (Rolla Russell Darling), Rolla made vigorous efforts to trace her inheritance, but to no avail. Interestingly, a letter from her brother William was received four days following her death (Parthenia's death). A friend of Parthenia's had been in touch with him, and in response, he wrote to Parthenia..."I hope you are not in as bad health as your friend thinks. She states to me that you have provided a home for your little boy in case of your death but that you are distressed about a home for Ida. Now I of course would do any thing in my power to help you get a home for her where she will be well treated. If it is necessary I think I can find her a good home some where away from the city. Write to me yourself if you are able, if not, have Ida or someone else write at once. Your Brother, William H. Winfrey". We can only wonder what might have been, had his letter to Parthenia arrived sooner. Ida was a member of Euclid Avenue Christian Church for many years and helped organize the women's league there. She was the founder of the Mary Bentley Emerson Study Circle and belonged to the Cleveland Literary Guild.
