Fatal Cutting Scrape Near Ponce De Leon Sunday Night, Bland In Jail.

Bill Odom is dead and Huey Bland is in the county jail here charged with murder as the outcome of a cutting scrape, three miles southeast of Ponce de Leon.

Odom was stabbed several times, the principal wound being a deep stab over the left nipple and a gash several inches long in the stomach. He lived from 9 o'clock. Bland was not hurt. He made his escape after the cutting, but was later caught by Will Skinner and landed in the Ponce de Leon town jail at Ponce de Leon. He was brought to Bonifay Monday and lodged in the county jail, the coroner's jury, which was empaneled by county judge Belser, returning a verdict charging him with murder. The coroner's jury was composed of the following men: A. Hussey, Jack Paul, Hurdis Green, Toom Hobbs, W. E. Parish and John M. Hall. They made as thorough investigation as was possible with the result as told above.

The killing occurred on the public road directly in front of the home of J. B. Moody. There were several men in the party and all hands were "tanked up" on moonshine whiskey, it is said. According to members of the party, Odom and Bland had dropped back in the rear and soon cries for help were heard. They rushed back and found Odom lying on he ground and crying out he had been killed. Bland had disappeared down the road.

Both Odom and Bland are married men, the latter having a wife an two children.

Note: Huey was sent to Florida State Prison at Raiford for killing Odom, and died there a few years later, being stabbed to death in a fight. The warden wrote Huey's father that the men in Hughey's work camp somehow got hold of some liquor and got intoxicated, and a fight broke out.--WCH, 14 Aug. 2005.
