On September 25, 1288 Sir Hugh Abernethy was part of a conspiracy that successfully murdered the Earl of Fife, Duncan Macduff. All four conspirators were captured and Hugh was imprisoned in Douglas Castle. On June 28, 1291 King Edward I ordered that Hugh be transferred to the Tower of London, where he died shortly there after.
