According to 'Early Days: Articles and Stories of the Upper Riverways by J. L. Stoops', he married Elizabeth Carr (1819-1894) in 1833 and he "moved to OH and then to Fulton Co., IL. He later moved to MO. He made his first trip to Texas Co., MO in 1848 as a circuit rider of the Disciples of Christ. He held recorded services at Rocky Ford on the north prong of Jack's Fork and at Jonathan Nagel's house in the present Nagel community. He moved his family to Spring Valley, Texas Co., MO in 1850 or 1851." {no longer online, 11 Feb 2009}

 In the 1850 census for Pleasant, Fulton Co., Illinois, Hugh Stoops [indexed as Hoops] is 38, farmer from Ohio; with Elizabeth 35 OH; Joseph 16 OH; Ada Ann 13; IL; John 11; Hugh 9; William 5; Margaret 5; and Andrew 2 -- all born IL.  They are next door to Michael Stoops 53 with wife? Sarah 28; and Martha E. 4; and Minerva 1; Ellen (Clanman?) is 17.
 In the 1860 census for Carroll, Texas Co., Missouri, 'Hew' [indexed as 'Hen'] 'Stoopes' is 50 Ohio 'farming'; with Elizabeth 45 Ohio; Hew 20; William 16 and Margaret 16 'twins'; Andy 11; Mitchell 9 -- all born Illinois; Thomas 6; and Barnabus 3 -- both born Missouri.
