After his mother died when he was two, Hugh and his siblings were farmed out to different relatives. James Edwin remarried and had three boys. When Hugh was eight, he heard "Mary", whom he called "mother," and a man possibly named Henry complaining that James Edwin was not paying for Hugh's room and board. That was how he learned about his parentage. (7/9/07)

His father was Clerk of the County Court, where he picked up skills. Hugh worked as a land surveyor for the government. Before that, before the "bust", which happened early in Florida, he worked in St. Petersburg with Hubert Rutland and a man named Baynard who later owned funeral homes. They shared a house.

He and his future wife, Leona, were both staying in a boarding house in Wilmington, NC. The first time he saw her he was sitting across from her at a table, and he told the man next to him that that was the woman he was going to marry.

Alcoholic; preferred gin.

Had a monkey named George as a child. They told him he couldn't sleep with George, but George climbed into his room through the transom.

The low point of his life was when he got a spanking at school, then he came home and they gave him another spanking for the same infraction.
