Hugh McLean emigrated from Scotland in his first year, 1849, on the ship Cashmere. He is listed as "Ewen" age 1 on the manifest. He never married, living with his older sister Mary, who also never married, in a small cabin set apart from the main farmhouse where his brother Donald and his family lived. At the time of his death in 1938, Hugh owned 125 acres on the 12th and 13th concession of Brooke Township, with an accessed value of $4250. He had $5541.34 in the bank, four cattle, some sheep and some hens.
