"Houston F. Wardwell, 78, died Aug. 30, 1999, at a Bangor nursing home after a long illness. He was born in Bucksport, Aug. 3, 1921, the son of Maynard B. and Ethel S. (Houston) Wardwell. He was a graduate of Bucksport High School, Class of 1939. He was first employed by Sanders Engineering Co. and later by B.I.W. Corporation in Bath. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving in the Asiatic-Pacific area. After discharge from the service, he returned to Bucksport, where he worked for St. Regis Paper Co. for 31 years in several positions including treasurer of Seaboard Federal Credit Union. He retired as assistant traffic manager in 1977. He was a long time call-fireman for the Bucksport Fire Department and retired as a captain. He was also a former officer in the Hancock County and Maine State Federation of Firefighters Associations. He was a life member of Franklin Street United Methodist Church. Houston was a 50+ year member of Felicity Chapter No. 195 O.E.S.; 50+ year member of Lincoln Lodge No. 3 A.F. & A.M. in Wiscasset. He was a member of the Hancock Chapter R.A.M.; Blanquefort Commandery No. 13 in Ellsworth; Bangor Council No. 5, R. & S.M.; Anah Shrine Temple; three Shrine Clubs; Sunshine Club for Children; member of N.R.A.; life member of V.F.W.; USS Saint Paul (CA73) Reunion Association. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis (Bryant) Wardwell of Bucksport; one son, George A. Wardwell of Middletown, R.I.; one daughter, Diane Wheeler of Brattleboro, Vt.; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; several cousins. He was predeceased by one son, Stephen in 1970 and a sister, Barbara in 1997. Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at Mitchell-Tweedie Funeral Home, 14 Elm St., Bucksport. Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Silver Lake Cemetery, Bucksport, with Pastor Peter Remick officiating. Donations may be made in his name to Shriners Hospitals for Children, Springfield Hospital, 516 Carew Street, Springfield, MA 01104." -Bangor Daily News 31 August 1999
