Homer grew up in the Safford, Arizona area, working on ranches for his father and others in the county. He was a veteran in the second World War and served as staff sergeant with the U.S Army from November 4, 1941 until November 20, 1945. He was a member of the LDS Church. He moved his family from Tucson, Arizona in the summer of 1964 to the Rogue Valley where they settled in the town of Central Point. Homer was a diesel mechanic and had worked in the copper mines of Arizona and then on trucks in the Rogue Valley.
