- Hank was unable to keep his band together after the start of World War II. Since he was classified 4-F, he was exempt from military service. Worked stints as a shipyard welder in Portland, OR, and Mobile, AL. But his mother still had faith in him. After booking him for several shows, she rented a car and drove to Mobile, where she picked him up and the pair returned to Montgomery. At the time, he was unable to get his band together, and joined a medicine show that was touring south Alabama. While touring with the medicine show in 1943, Hank met his future wife, Audrey. She was still married at the time and had a two-year-old daughter, Lycrecia*
